Roofing Tiles / Shingles

asphalt shingles

Asphalt Shingles

The most popular and least expensive roof cover is the asphalt shingle. They are available in two types - organic, and non-organic, which is fiberglass. They come in a variety of colors and durability. They are seen on homes in every part of the country. The shingle is vulnerable to wind and ice damage, so your climate should be considered when choosing asphalt for your needs.  Always check the manufacturer’s warranty as some require a certified roofer install the shingles or the warranty is void. You can expect to pay between $55 and $150 per square (square equals a 10 ft x 10 ft section)

Clay Tile Roofs

Clay is a good roofing material regardless of your location.  In addition, it is resistant to insects - mold and decay - won't burn - and will often outlast the decking it is built upon. You will often see this style of roofing on homes with a southwestern, Italian, or Spanish Mission design. You must keep in mind that a clay roof is very heavy, and expensive to install. It should never be walked on. Plan on paying $150 to $400 a square for installation.

slate tiles

Slate Roofs

Slate is another roofing material that is long lasting and near indestructible. It is not uncommon for these roofs to last over 100 years. Its resistance to the elements is similar to clay tiles, and like clay tiles is extremely heavy. Slate roofs are very expensive to install, because it typically requires skilled stonemasons to do the installation. Prepare to pay $1,000 to $1,500 a square to have it installed. But keep in mind, you’ll only have to install once.

metal roofs

Metal Roofs

Metal roof costs anywhere from $2.00 to $6.00 per square foot to install. It installs very quickly and easily and is resistant to fire, insects, mildew and rot. These roofs are often seen in climates that get a lot of snow.
Whatever your wish for roofing materials are, be sure to know the cost of installation and durability issues. A good roof will last for many years - a poorly installed roof will be nothing but trouble. Use these guidelines in your next roofing project.
